SOS Daily News : news about the State of Steem @ 8 January 2019

in steem •  3 months ago

There is a reason why PR companies exist.

Other companies use them to help manage how the media portrays them to the world at large.

Because of the decentralised nature of the Steem world our PR has largely been AWOL.

As far as I can observe Steemit Inc has never employed a PR agency. Or if it has, it has not been a very effective one.

For the Steem community at large we are our own PR agency.

As the DarkOverlord 'situation' demonstrates again, without PR we are at the mercy of whatever the media wants to write about us. No comment.

We Need To Talk To Journalists

@daan poses the question "Who's Been Contacting Journalists About Steem?".

We need to get out there and talk to journalists.

If we take the stories to the journos we might have a bit more of a say in what is written...

The DarkOverlord Ban Gets A Roasting

The crypto-media are having a field day with Steemit Inc's blocking of the @thedarkoverlord account from the steemit.com interface.

And on Twitter it's open season.

With a dash of PR could both sides of the story have been presented?

Meanwhile in the crypto press...

Do We Need A Decentralized Community Regulated Account For A Better Steem?

@soyrosa poses the question "could a decentralized community regulated account be the next step needed towards a better Steem?"

And she has set up a DPoll to vote on the idea.

I am pretty sure the answer is yes.

The how might be less clear cut.

Thanks Bucky, hope you had a good festive break. And the new year has got off to a good start.

The CCN article is good as it clearly states that Dark Overlord is not really censored and that their posts can still be seen, just not on Steemit. Steemit Inc have to protect themselves if illegal content is posted, but I'm not clear on the exact reason the account was blocked from the site. It's interesting that only 6 accounts have been blocked like this.

·

I think Steemit Inc should make a statement to explain their actions. Otherwise it just looks as if Steemit is not a place for free speech. I've said in my comment below that I don't like extortion, but I do like to know the truth about what's going on.

·
·

Yes a formal statement or press release would be very useful.

It's a problem with only using a 24 letter alphabet.

·

It's interesting that only 6 accounts have been blocked like this.

probably influence of some powerful entities..

the whole censorship thing with media and blocking accounts on frontends just proves me again, how through-thought and goodworking this blockchain is :)

·
·

I don't think Steemit want to police it, but as a company they may have to in rare cases. I've not looked into the other blocked accounts. We know they don't deal with spammers. They leave that to the community.

·
·
·

Yea that's what Im talking about.
The concept of the blockchain is so good thought, because the problematic posts and accounts are still saved, but if a powerful entity or media makes pressure they can also save themselves as company by deleting the problematic content from their frontend.
Theyre still on the blockchain, but noone can complain at Stinc.. :)

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion that the chainsmith is not responsible for what happens on the blockchain. The SEC has made it clear that chainsmiths are liable for what does happen.

On the other hand, blockchain based social platforms are new, so laws don't really exist yet. It's possible that exchanges may start to force the removal of illegal content on the blockchain itself. Another possibility is witnesses hosting the illegal content could be liable.

It's really untested waters, but it's going to be interesting to see how it plays out. No matter what happens I'm hoping that the Steem blockchain will adapt to the laws. And all blockchain based platforms will be dealing with the same issues so it will not be unique to Steem. Steem is just the first case.

Ultimately the exchanges have the blockchains by the balls, because without exchanges, there's no way to get your money out. Unless you can somehow pay for everything in Steem. But if no exchanges existed, I'm guessing the value would be near zero. So if they say that we have to start policing blockchain content, it's going prob get done, which could lump Steem back in with all the other censoring platforms.

·

Yes, the CCN article is the best of the bunch, and the journalist has clearly done some work.

The final sentence is a bit odd though...

Complete alternatives to Steem exist. Minds.com has a growing userbase and allows anyone to boost their content using its tokens.

·
·

Minds has the same problem we have, nwo controlled contollers and not enough regular users.
Ive been there since july '15.
They sandbagged my view counts to keep me off their front page.
Their erc20 coin can be bought for 15cents but good luck finding buyers for yours.
I wouldnt waste them boosting, either, there is nobody to see it.

·
·
·

Useful to know, thank you.

·
·

I've looked at Minds, but not got much from it. Lots of 'controversial' people on there as they are supposed to be against censorship. I decided it wasn't worth my time. I think Steem is much bigger.

·
·
·

Yes I took a brief peak, but one platform is quite enough for me.

·
·
·
·

Same here. Time is limited and I get enough to keep me occupied here.

·
·
·
·
·
·
·

Haha. Yeah. Saw that when i read it. Had to add it to my post. I think that quote goes in hand with censorship being a 4 letter word in the crypto space.

·
·
·

Well. On a day when I woke up thinking that Soyrosa's incredibly thoughtful post would be the main topic of discussion what do I find?

I guess I understand Steemit Inc trying to protect themselves legally, but really? It's amazing how fast they can move if pressed. I thought that Ned was probably in the hospital near death since his live stream hasn't been rescheduled....

It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood! Should add to the discussions on Thursday...

·

Yes, always good to see swift action. Maybe a new precedent for 2019...

Thx for the mention on the Darklord topic. Think this should be discussed a bit more in depth. I dont think steemit.inc actions are completely unjustifiable as some may claim. Arguments can be made for both sides.

·

Yes I agree. I think an official statement from Steemit Inc would be very helpful to give a full perspective to the issue.

Again thank you very much for bringing up the @dtube.forum in your posts and for referencing one of my videos here!

We are looking forward to an awesome event with a lot of great creators and speakers in the beautiful city of Barcelona!

It would be awesome to welcome you as well there :)

Peace!

·

It sounds like it is going to be a great event.

Keep me posted on progress.

I hadn't realised that the "Dark Overlord" had been banned from Steemit Inc. That's a terrible move, in my opinion. I hate what the "Dark Overlord" group is doing, because I hate extortion - but I think they should have a platform so that people know what is going on and can speak out about it if they so choose.
This move puts Steemit in the same league as the rest of the corporate media.
I'm glad that the Dark Overlord's platform is still on the Steem blockchain, and available on busy.org. I hadn't even looked at their posts until today, though I had heard about them. The public has a right to know what's going on, so we can discuss these issues.

That article from cryptoslate is pure shit. Badly research and full of half truths. At least the one from ccn is factual and gives a good overview of what really happened. It's well written and doesn't show any negativity to the blockchain.

Word of mouth is the best PR and we have to start with something as simple as Steemit is not Steem!

As actively engaged steemians average only around one in a million population, there is a lot of talking to be done.

We, alas, need to use the media in all its forms...

Thanks for the work!

Thanks for these. @shredz7 I am in touch with regularly.

@fulltimegeek has gone quiet with Vaporchain - I am hoping it will pop out soon.

fantastic work @pennsif. PR is something we need for sure.
