I received some lovely samples from @evyxxx the other day. Among them a Bunnahabhain from the annual Fèis ìle Festival. Let's give it a review, shall we?
Bunnahabhain 14-year-old - Warehouse 9 - Hand Filled Exclusive
Age: 14 years old
Cask type: 1st fill Oloroso sherry
Cask No: 1490
Natural color & non-chill filtered
Appearance: Very dark and cloudy. Mahogany.
Nose: Heavy, dense sherry notes. Holy cow, this is going to be a taste bomb. Plenty of ripe figs, I could almost mistake it for a barley wine! Tart, sweet and quite vinous. After 20-30 minutes in the glass I actually get some faint maritime notes in the background together with more earthy aromas such as leather and tobacco.
Palate: They've sure used some really good Oloroso casks for this one. Burnt sugar, figs and plenty of chocolate. Some saltiness, albeit not as much as in the Manzanilla version. Some bitterness and austerity there that balances the sweetness, and a lovely christmasy clove note.
Finish: Drying and extremely long.
Conclusion: Brilliant stuff again. If you ever get your hands on a Fèis ìle bottling from Bunnahabhain , grab it without hesitation. Cheers to @evyxxx for the beautiful samples! Oh, a score? Probably 92 out of 100.
