The Big Five Personality Traits / Beş Büyük Kişilik Özelliği

Pastel Ocean Album Cover (1).jpg

Do people who are successful in business have common personality traits? What are these personality traits if any? I did not know the answer of this question until recently, I am neither a psychologist nor a human resource management expert. In recent months, the information that I found during my internet searches has enabled me to be enlightened about the topic. There is a theoretical framework called OCEAN, which examines personality traits in five dimensions. I'm always skeptical about theoretical knowledge. If it's possible, I check to see if it is compatible to life. I was very impressed by the fact that OCEAN was in line with the observations I've had throughout my working life. That's why I decided to write this article.

The human personality is a very complex structure with dozens of different dimensions. It is difficult to examine and understand a structure with such a large number of dimensions. However, because some personality traits are similar, they can be grouped under a single title. Thus, human personality is defined by the characteristics expressed under the titles of openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Before I begin to explain what these traits mean, I would like to talk about the history of the topic.

In 1884, Sir Francis Galton hypothesized that people's personality traits could be categorized into words that express them in the language. In 1936, Gordon Allport and S. Odbert put Sir Francis Galton's hypothesis into practice by extracting 4,504 adjectives which they believed were descriptive of observable traits from the dictionaries at that time. In time, different psychologists gradually decrease the number of these adjectives by factor analysis studies. At a conference in Honolulu in 1980, Lewis Goldberg, Naomi Takemoto-Chock, Andrew Comrey and John M. Digman offered "Big Five Personality Traits" model and is widely accepted in the psychology world.

Openness To Experience

Openness is a general appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, imagination, curiosity, and variety of experience. People who are open to experience are intellectually curious, open to emotion, sensitive to beauty and willing to try new things. They tend to be, when compared to closed people, more creative and more aware of their feelings.

People with low points in the openness tend to have more traditional, stereotypical interests. They prefer the simple, direct and clear to the complex and uncertain. They can find art and science hard to understand and free from practical use. Closed people prefer what they are familiar. They are conservative and resistant to change.

Sample Items:

  • I'm full of ideas.
  • I can understand concepts quickly.
  • I have a rich vocabulary.
  • I have a vivid imagination.
  • I spend time thinking about things.
  • I use difficult words.
  • I'm not interested in abstract ideas. (reverse)
  • I have no good imagination. (reverse)

Conscientiousness

Conscientiousness is a tendency to display self-discipline, act dutifully, and strive for achievement against measures or outside expectations. It is related to the way in which people control, regulate, and direct their impulses. High scores on conscientiousness indicate a preference for planned rather than spontaneous behavior.

These individuals achieve a high level of success by planning and showing continuity in this. They are called by others as reliable and intelligent. On the other hand, they can be compulsive perfectionists and workaholics.

Sample Items

  • I'm always ready for duty.
  • I'm a tough guy in my business.
  • I follow a program.
  • I'il do the housework right now.
  • I like order.
  • I pay attention to details.
  • I leave my stuff around. (reverse)

Extraversion

Extraversion is manifested by an open interaction with the outside world. Exroverts enjoy being with people, often described as full of energy. They like to talk, put themselves forward in the group and attract attention.

Inrovert people tend to be less concerned aboot social world. Lack of social participation should not be interpreted as they are shy or depressed. Introverts just don't need to spend a lot of time with people.

Sample Extraversion Items

  • I'm the centre of the party.
  • I want to be the focus of attention.
  • I feel comfortable with people.
  • I start the conversation.
  • I don't like being the focus of attention. (reverse)
  • I don't talk too much. (reverse)

Agreeableness

Agreeablesness is defined as being compassionate and ready to help, rather than being suspicious and opposed to others. Compatible individuals get along easily with others. They are generally seen as respectful, friendly, generous, helpful, and willing to compromise on the wishes of others. Agreeable individuals have an optimistic view of human nature. They believe that people are honest, respected and trustworthy.

Incompatible individuals take advantage of their own interests over others. They are usually less interested in others. Sometimes their skepticism about others causes them to be unfriendly, and impersonal.

Sample Agreeableness Items

  • I take care of people.
  • I empathize with others.
  • I have a soft heart.
  • I can relax people.
  • I spend time with others.
  • I don't care about people's problems. (reverse)
  • I humiliate people. (reverse)

Neuroticism

Neuroticism is defined as the tendency to experience negative emotions such as anger, anxiety, depression. Those who get high points in neurotism are emotionally sensitive and prone to stress. They tend to treat usual situations as threatening and despairingly difficult. Their negative emotional reactions take unusually long, which usually means they are in a bad mood. These problems in emotional balance can prevent these individuals from thinking openly, making decisions, and effectively coping with stress.

On the other side of the scale, individuals with less neuroticism score are more distressed. They tend to be calm and emotionally stable.

In contrast to other dimensions, it is preferable to get a low score on neuroticism.

Sample Neuroticism Items

  • I get irritated easily
  • I get stressed out easily
  • I get upset easily
  • I have frequent mood swings
  • I worry about things
  • I am much more anxious than most people
  • I am relaxed most of the time. (reversed)

Tecrübelere Açık Olma(Openness To Experience)

  • Her zaman göreve hazırımdır.
  • İşimde zor beğenen biriyimdir.
  • Bir programı takip ederim.
  • Ev işlerini hemen yaparım.
  • Düzeni severim.
  • Detaylara dikkat ederim.
  • Eşyalarımı ortalıkta bırakırım. (tersi)
  • Dağınık birisiyimdir. Ortalığı dağıtırım. (tersi)

  • Kolay strese girerim.
  • Genellikle keyifsiz hissederim.
  • Olaylar hakkında endişe duyarım.
  • Ender olarak keyifsiz hissederim. (tersi)

Hi @muratkbesiroglu. According to this post, my personality would happen to be somewhat complex, since I have mixed well valanceadas of the first four elements of the personality, jajajajajajaja. I like art and to a certain extent I consider myself a small artist. I love acting and I do not refuse to experience adventures and I admire the beauty where it is, but I do not like many unforeseen changes. I am disciplined but not methodical, I pay attention to the little things. I am 100% extroverted; however, I do not fight to be the center of attention. I am very dedicated to collaborate with people and offer my support, but I do not always manage to be so altruistic. With what I do not identify at all is with the neurosis, hahaha. Well, I'm rarely in a bad mood, I'm positive but realistic, and I'm not impulsive at all. That is, a somewhat complex mixture seems, hahaha. I really liked your publication. Greetings.

Every successful business, always bring about a of commitment and endurance without it no business can grow

Successful people have a common motto: NEVER GIVE UP!

Beautiful expression .. Well done
It makes us get excited for the future
Thank you for sharing that with us‏..

nice

great stuff

These traits play vital role in our life. Successful people also display a number of personality traits that make them more productive and motivated. So It is no doubt more important to cultivate personality, influence, and outer perceptions than to develop nobility of heart, mind, and deed.
Good personality also consists of defining your values and integrity based on time-tested principles and self-reflection and having the courage to live your life accordingly.
@muratkbesirogluLiked this post very much so I upvoted and resteemed

mercy good topic thx

Thank you for this. This is all valuable information and a very interesting topic to discuss. I am specifically curious about neuroticism. I am beginning my own research on neurotic behavior and the negative effects of that.

·

I red a book several years ago from Karen Horney about neuroticism. According to her it is somewhat beneficial, motivating people to do better. But if it is intense, very very annoying

Actually our personality is made of all of these 5 personality traits, but with different proportions. I definitely can find some attributes that apply to myself in each of these list, and most people probably do.
But anyway, nice post, thanks for sharing !

The way you have used the examples is awesome in order to clear the term and concept of the term also.

Tenacity is also a trait that is a must if you want to succeed in a business. It is inevitable that there will be more downs before ups. I am experiencing this right now as I am looking as well for a business venture that would work for me. So far, I am not getting any success but I am still trying. I believe there is something out there for me and I just have to keep looking and hold on to my dreams of financial freedom.

Excellent post very informative, I am of the people that believe this essence that defines our personality, is still a reason for research due to we are individual beings will always be complex, likewise in each of the lists we can find some attribute that apply to my self o why not , so this is what makes the study of the peronas interesting and why not ourselves ? the human mind and their study is so exciting and complex

Good luck and congratulations @muratkbesiroglu

What a post..simply amazing
Well its all in our head ... Life is just super awesome when we control our mind and emotions vut it becomes terrible when our mind starts to rule us.. Whole life we run for things which are least important but we forget about what we have. In a rush to achieve our goals we forget that what we have is more important than what we will have. God has planned everything than who are we to disturb his planning!!
We live our life planning for future but what about today! Today is what we should live for rest is all unreal. If I will do this then this will happen !! Who has seen future guys live for today and life is today.
Stay happy and stay with people with whom you are happy. Give importance to those for whom you are important . Dont run behind those whom you dont even know.
Life is very important guys just live it to the fullest and be happy...
And thanks for the post sir...its worth following and upvoting you ....thanks

People have all five of these traits built in. An individuals experiences dictate which becomes dominant

Never give up, and be confident in what you do. .

Never give up.jpg

Dream it believe it and achive it what life says its eassy for them who believe in their dreams to achive sucess

Thank you so much for sharing your precious opinions and I must agree with you.

Those people who are successful in business have the traits of a sociopath. To be well adjusted to a fundamentally sick society is no measure of virtue.

·

It is true for some of the top managers ☺

well composed in an understandable way, nice one

It is not necessary that people who good in buisness or doing good in buisness must have traits...
But there are some buisnesman in the world about whom we hear that they are having some common traits..

very nice and usefull post. Thank you

Hi. I agree when you say that our success depends in large part on our personality. And I would add that our personality is the reflection of how we see and accept life. How resilient we can become. Besides that we should not surround ourselves with toxic people that end up damaging our energy. (A post about toxic personalities would be good). Making a self-analysis, I must admit that I am not very outgoing and that in a way has limited me with how I relate to others, and obviously affects part of my life to some extent. How nice to have found this publication, maybe I should lose the fear of socializing with people as much as necessary.

Hy! To be successful you have to work hard and never give up!! :)

Well I did the test. Now I'm confused ;-) But when I answered the questions I was aware of myself as a young person and now. A lot changed along the way I found out. I don't know yet if that's a good thing though in some ways ;-)

Very good your publication.

I appreciate you sharing this piece on this platform. From experience, most successful people tend to neoroticists, mostly introverts, less agreeable, conscientious and open to experience, which is the fun part about them. I don't know if you agree with me but successful people are quite difficult to deal with. My opinion tho hahaha

Wao, nice, really educating, thanks for posting

Hi,i am arrafi.i just see your post of who success in business.Till the success. That is why a person who will be hardworking in his work.so every businessman can success his business of hardworking.

Yeah... I read through this post
It's telling the truth because i noticed most of the traits in me.
At times, I'm stressed out when i give my efforts in to something to make profits and then it goes bad.
Bloahh i could run mad. But i choose to be strong and never to give up.

Thanks for sharing. It will be helpful in future.

I think the type of environment a person grew up in and they experiences they had in life, and how they responded to them also play a big part in their success.

What if i have a lil bit from all😂😂😂😂

It's true what you says.

I love hard worker because a hard worker is only king man.

I think I’m low on nuerrocism as you say, because I’m calm and emotionally stable. However I do get depressed a lot, so it’s probably not the best personality trait to have.

·

Given a choice, I think it's probably preferable to be depressed and stable vs. depressed and neurotic. :-)

we are all defined by our habits and that is why successful persons are known to have a personality that supports success

It was an interesting read. I liked the acronym "OCEAN" to sum up the whole concept and also the gifs that you have used are really funny and help bring home the points being made. This is the first time that I have come across this concept and it does seem to make a lot of sense as each of those factors do define your personality one way or another. Thanks for sharing!

This is very informative.
I'm sure going to prepare my next Toastmasters speech around it. ☺

Good piece. I've always wondered why the majority of people think that introverts tend to be depressed and non-social. There is nothing wrong with not being social; not to be confused with anti-social though...

Interestingly presented I will be looking more often

I think i belong to neuroticism, probably because of alot of experiences i have been through. The anxiety part is the most difficult to control.

I like the concept, but I always seem to have issues with these kind of tests that try to categorize you based on a fairly short questionnaire. In fact, I just took 3 different versions of the Big 5 test online and had some big variation in results:

  • Consistently low on Neuroticism (range from 3-15)
  • Consistently high on Openness (range from 93-100)
  • Big range on Conscientiousness (28-54)
  • Huge range on Extroversion (34-86, 2 were roughly same, one completely different)
  • Huge range on Agreeableness (28-76, again, 2 roughly the same and one completely different)

The problem is that these scales are too simplistic, at least for me, and I'm sure for other people. So my score varies radically depending on the nature of the questions.

For example, I'm comfortable in any social situation, I don't mind being the center of attention, and I make friends easily. Extrovert, right? Except that, given a choice, I'd usually rather spend time alone than with people, and I'm perfectly happy talking to just one or two people at a party - I don't "make the rounds". So it totally depends on the specifics.

Conscientiousness? I'm very conscientious about commitments to other people when they're really depending on me, less so when it's just because I said I would do it, and I don't have what one would typically think of as rigorous self-disciplined. I'm actually very self-disciplined, just not in the typical way. I don't keep commitments just for commitment's sake, but when it really matters, I'm super-reliable.

My point is, I think these tools can be useful for self-exploration, but don't put too much weight into any one test or system. Human beings are complex -- YOU are complex -- and any test that has only 100 questions has questionable accuracy and probably isn't going to offer you any profound insights. And if you think it does, you might want to question it more deeply.
